Opening Party with Chrislee Bear

22:00
Entrance Free
Chrislee Bear noticed early on that a great playlist is the success of any house party, and began to meticulously assemble these music selections. That’s how he wound up doing this DJ thing – and now he plays the most excellent Trash at parties such as Rhinoplasty, Impulstranz F-cked Plus, and Männer im Garten. He believes that the most democratic form of music is pop music and describes the songs that he plays as unpretentious but amusing.

Bixa Travesty (Tranny Fag) is a feature-length documentary picturing a Brazilian transsexual singer called Linn da Quebrada. Coming from a very poor region of São Paulo, she faces many prejudices, also for being black. Her funk music sounds like a “gun” against machismo. With a really strong and daring presence on stage, she constantly seeks to discuss and fight paradigms and stereotypes.

“Bucking” is the dance I can guarantee you have seen, but probably never knew what was. Slowly the dance style has seeped into mainstream culture, 20 years after being created by gay African American men in the southern states of the US as a protest against exclusion from cheerleading. In New York, vouging was the thing, but in the south “bucking” ruled. Director Jamal Sims has several dance films on his resume. Here he gives us an inspiring documentary reminding us that when society puts stigmas on us, you should just ignore them and follow your heart and passions in protest.

BRAZILIAN CONTEMPORARY QUEER SHORTS

21:00
Director: several
Country: Brazil
Year: several
Duration: 85 min
Type: Shorts
Language: Portuguese
Subtitles: EN

AUSTRIAN PREMIERE

Take a look at a selection of Brazil’s contemporary queer short film productions: these are films whose queer aesthetics go beyond everyday LGBTIQA representation, made by people who just recently started to tell their own stories. Brazil is reported to have the highest LGBT murder rate in the world, with a LGBT person being killed every 25 hours – so to film these lives, loves and culture is, in itself, an act of resistance. In this programme you won’t find shame: instead, the programme presents a joyful celebration of queer living, diverse in theme and region, with films that come from 5 different cities in the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest of Brazil. In STUDY IN RED, ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture are mixed together in an analysis of queerness as an art form (plus, a stunning cover of Kate Bush’s ‘Wuthering Heights’). Made by a trans* crew, TAILOR is an animated documentary about a transgender cartoonist and the people he draws. AFRONTE is a part-fictionalized documentary in which black gay men reflect on their experiences, racism and community in the outskirts of Brazil’s capital. In NOT YET, a lesbian has a difficult time when her mother comes to visit; and in VANDO AKA VEDITA, we are introduced to a group of young people who dye their hair blonde and wander the slums of Fortaleza city.
